AFC Champions League
By: 21 | September 16th, 2008The AFC Champions League moves to the quarter-finals with J-League clubs dominating the round. Kashima Antlers, Gamba Osaka and the defending champions, Urawa Red Diamonds play later today in the following matches:
Kashima Antlers - Adelaide United
Kashima plowed through competition in group stages netting four goals per match however of late in the J-League they have lacked their customary attacking prowess. They will need to be at their creative best as United manager Aurelio Vidmar has put together one of the best defensive clubs in the A-League. Their back-line of Angelo Costanzo, Sasa Ognenovski, Scott Jamieson and Alemão will re-define padlocking a match and look to take this back to Australia without Kashima on the scoreboard. Marchinho, Shinzo Koroki and Marquinhos will need to play inspired Football to break through Adelaide’s defense. Yuzo Tashiro has also been playing extremely good of late and could be the surprise creative influence later in the match.
Al Qadsia (Kuwait) - Urawa Red Diamonds
Urawa is facing a very stern test in defense of their title as they go toe-to-toe against legendary Kuwait Football club Al Qudsia. The powerful Red Diamond offense has been slowed recently but will need to find their form against the technically efficient Al Quadsia. This is a very tough match in Kuwait and Urawa are severely handicapped without Nippon Daihyo capped Tatsuya Tanaka and Keita Suzuki. Yuki Abe and Marcus Tulio Tanaka will need to be at their very best for the Red Diamonds to return home with points.
Al Karama (Syria) - Gamba Osaka
Gamba will have to deal with a massive issue of trying to break through at Khaled bin Walid Stadium because Al Karama is rarely defeated at home. This comes at a bad time for Gamba as they have fallen on rough times of late and only won one match in the last ten. Consistency will be the key for them and keeping Al Karama hemmed-up in a tight defensive match.

The match just finished but you were the only one who asked of the live blog. Please let me know before and I’ll take care of if we have enough people. Were you able to watch?
Sasa Ognenovski and Alemão aren’t on Adelaide? I’m not sure what you mean. I see that Alemão wasn’t on the squad list today (a little late for the club to announce on the web-site btw) and I thought his injury was fine. Please let me know because I have a friend who blogs of Adelaide and told me he thought this match would be a draw

thanks for clearing that up. I was very confused with that and Adelaide isn’t the best at disclosing information.
If we have enough people I’ll do a live-blog but otherwise I’ll just watch the game and be available for those who are watching.
